ELT in Images and Metaphor

Wednesday 1 July 2009

We are surrounded by images. While they have always exerted a powerful force upon us, there are those who argue that in today’s multimedia, connected and digital world images carry more weight than ever. Two books on images have recently been published in the field of English language teaching (Images by Jamie Keddie and Working with Images by Ben Goldstein), and via the internet teachers now have easy access to millions of photos, drawings, maps and so on.

Over the next month, I’ll be inviting you to reflect on certain images. These are images that I believe are present in ELT, and are often used metaphorically. The image itself should trigger some associations, and I will briefly comment on each one before throwing it open to you.

At the end of the month, I will wrap up with some notes on how you could perhaps use these images in a teacher training session or for a staff development workshop.

So stay tuned, and enjoy…
